The Eyjafjallajökull  volcano erupted in 2010 . The eruption was a ‘grey’ and ‘dry’ eruption for most of the first stage, shooting  millions of tonnes of ash into the air. This ash column drifted over Europe. Then came the lava . This eruption had effects on the people, the economy, the environment and the government.

How was the Economy affected?

20% of the Kenyan economy is based on the export of green vegetables such as beans, sugar-snap peas ,okra and cut flowers to Europe. These are perishable goods and they are transported by plane to keep them fresh ,because there were no available flights to Europe meant products returned unsold and destroyed

Over 1 million flower stalks were unsold in the first two days and Over 50,000 farmers were temporarily unemployed as their beans and peas could not be sold.

The ash cloud has cost the Kenyan economy millions of pounds during the flight ban.

Airlines and associated businesses were losing about £130 million a day

How did this affect people?

Flooding occurred, the heat melted a lot of ice under the ice caps causing roads to be shut and about 800 people had to be evacuated

The eruption was a disruption to farming, the farmers had to keep their animals indoors in order to keep them alive, the drinking water was poisoned by Florine-tainted ash. There was an ash fall of 10Cm but the Nutrients released may have a positive effect on the soil in the long term.

Airports had to be closed, such as the 'keflavik' airport for several days and then again in mid may.

The ash caused schools to close in the southern part of the island on 7-8th of may.

Some people experienced minor health problems such as eye irritations and dry throats.

The ash mixed with melt water and rain created mudslides and lahars.

The eruption brought a lot of tourists into Iceland, by the end of march 10,000 people had visited the eruption, but tourists were also attracted to other things such as 'lagoon Jokulsarlón', but the main impact was the airspace across mainland Europe was closed preventing Europeans to visit.

People with respiratory problems such as asthma were a massive concern but there was few cases because the ash was trapped to high for people to be ill.

the people living in the rural areas ‘down wind’ of the volcano had to wear goggles and facemasks as the ash was so thick.

Did it affect the environment?

Eyjafjallajökull eruption up to a maximum of 30000 tonnes of CO2 into the air per day a number roughly equal to the emissions of 2,000 cars per year

The water was contaminated with fluoride from the eruption.

The glass-and-rock mixture is fatal to most plant species since it prevents photosynthesis.

sulfur dioxide is released when a volcano erupts. Sulfate aerosols also take part in chemical reactions, forming ozone destructive material.

Lava flows are streams of molten rock that pour or ooze from the erupting vent.  They destroy everything in their path.

Many presidential meetings had to be cancelled due to the close age of the air space, Barack Obama was one of those people

Iceland is an MEDCs, although the eruption impacted a lot of the world, Iceland can handle this kind of  disaster because they saw it coming. The economical impacts caused by the volcano don't affect Iceland's economy majorly. Iceland have the facilities to handle this type of things so that less people will die. If the same eruption happened in an LEDC the impacts will be more and worse.
