In 2010, a volcano erupted under the Eyjafjallajokull ice cap in the south east of Iceland, the eruption was small but had a massive impact on air travel across Northern Europe 

The name is a description of the characteristics of the volcano, namely Eyja meaning island;fjalla meaning mountain; and jokull meaning glacier.
